Program Faculty:Nicole Griffin, the Program director has a Masters degree in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics, and is an ASCP certified Medical Laboratory Scientist.  Mary Wallace, the Clinical Education Coordinator is also a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist and holds a Master's degree in Science.

The program consists of 96 hours of didactic instruction and over 100 hours clinical experience that will prepare students for entry level positioins within the healthcare field as a trained phlebotomist. Didactic instruction will take place at St. Catherine Hospital where there is a dedicated room for phlebotomy program instruction. Course work includes lectures on accurate patient identification, proper technique, as well as infection control procedures, safety measures and laboratory regulations. Students will received printouts of all lectures, worksheets, quizzes and exams. Students must pass a mock registry prior to entering the clinical portion of the program. The didactic portion will also include student labs where the students will practice phelbotomy on a fake arm, and then eventually perform phlebotomy on the instructors and other willing volunteers (including each other). Clinical practium consists of 2 weeks of performing phlebotomy at multiple draw sites within Community Healthcare System. The student will also spend one week performing phlebotomy on in-patients at St. Catherine Hospital and the other hospitals within the Community Healthcare System. Students need to complete 100 successful sticks, 20 of which must be collected on inpatients.   Students learn a variety of techniques in specimen collection e.g. straight needle and butterfly collections.

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Minimum High School GPA of 2.50 out of a 4.0 scale.High school courses should include Algebra, Biology or Chemistry,and English composition. Students must also be able to perform essential functions, and pass a drug screen and background check.

The first class is set to start in January 2021. Application deadline 12-15-20 for the initial session.There will be 2 sessions per year. One in January and another in June. Applications for the June program will be due by May 15th.
