The Tax Preparation & Financial Services Certificate prepares individuals to understand federal and state taxation concepts and apply them in real-world settings. Participants complete training in tax law, return preparation, bookkeeping, and financial literacy, culminating in the IRS VITA/TCE certification. The program combines classroom instruction, online modules, and supervised practicum hours at an IRS-approved VITA site. Graduates gain the skills required for employment as Tax Preparers, Bookkeeping Assistants, and Financial Service Specialists in both private and community-based environments.
Through the IRS Link & Learn platform and Elevate for Humanity’s financial training curriculum, students master key competencies in individual taxation, ethics, client intake, and electronic filing, while also building transferable skills in business communication, budgeting, and entrepreneurship.
Participants must be 18 years or older with basic reading, writing, and computer skills. A high-school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Applicants must complete a short intake interview and basic math/reading assessment before training. No prior tax experience required.
Applications accepted year-round, with rolling start dates every 6–8 weeks. Classes begin in November, January, and March aligned with the tax-season cycle. Students are encouraged to apply at least one week before the desired cohort date.
