Description

Program faculty possess extensive industry experience and meet minimum occupational and instructional qualification standards for welding instruction. Instructors hold verifiable welding industry experience consistent with state workforce and career and technical education (CTE) requirements.

Minimum qualifications include:

• A minimum of 4,000–6,000 hours of documented occupational experience in welding or related fabrication fields

• Industry-recognized welding certifications and/or successful completion of an accredited welding program, apprenticeship, or equivalent documented training

• Eligibility for Indiana Department of Education Career and Technical Education (CTE) licensure in Trade & Industrial Education – Welding (5–12) or Workplace Specialist – Welding (9–12), when applicable

• Demonstrated experience supervising and instructing in a professional shop environment

Certification testing, when applicable, is administered or overseen by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).

This accelerated 30-hour program prepares participants for entry-level welding roles using the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) process. Designed for youth and opportunity youth cohorts, the program delivers intensive hands-on training focused on solid-wire GMAW applications used in manufacturing and light fabrication environments.

Students receive structured instruction in welding safety aligned with general industry standards, machine setup, wire feed speed and voltage adjustment, joint preparation, and visual inspection techniques consistent with AWS D1.1 structural welding criteria. Training emphasizes skill development, professional shop conduct, and workforce readiness in a high-accountability environment.

Upon successful completion, students who demonstrate skill competency may attempt the AWS D1.1 2F Fillet Weld Performance Qualification (GMAW/MIG) administered by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
