Program faculty must have education, certification, and/or directly related occupational experience sufficient to teach the assigned subject matter. At minimum, instructors should hold a postsecondary certificate, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or higher in health information management, medical billing and coding, healthcare administration, health sciences, or a closely related field, along with at least two years of relevant work experience in medical billing, coding, health information, insurance claims, or revenue-cycle operations. Faculty teaching coding-specific content should also hold, or be actively qualified through substantial industry experience to teach toward, a recognized credential such as CBCS, CPC, CCS, CCA, or an equivalent certification. Instructor qualifications will be verified through résumés, transcripts, certifications, and employment history before assignment to the program.

Rooted Health Institute’s Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Program is a 24-week occupational training program that prepares students for entry-level roles in medical billing, coding, health information, insurance claims, and revenue-cycle operations. The program includes 20 weeks of instruction in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, insurance eligibility, regulatory compliance, claim preparation, reimbursement, payment posting, denials, and accounts receivable, followed by an 80-hour supervised externship. Students complete coding exercises, case studies, electronic health record and billing simulations, module assessments, and CBCS certification preparation designed to build the technical accuracy, professionalism, and practical skills needed in healthcare administrative settings.

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Applicants must possess a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent before enrollment. Students should also demonstrate basic reading comprehension, written communication, mathematics, and computer literacy skills sufficient to complete online coursework, use electronic health record and billing software, navigate coding resources, and submit assignments electronically. No prior healthcare, medical billing, or coding experience is required. Students participating in the externship must successfully complete the required academic coursework and satisfy any site-specific requirements, which may include a background check, drug screening, immunization records, confidentiality agreements, or other compliance documentation.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the cohort is filled. Applicants are encouraged to submit all required materials at least two weeks before the scheduled program start date. Late applications may be considered if space remains and the applicant can complete all admissions requirements before the first day of class.
