This heading will encompass five distinct programs:  secondary teacher (grades 5-12) enrolled in a traditional undergraduate program; secondary teacher (grades 5-12) enrolled in transition to teaching; multilingual learner teacher (grades K-12); special education teacher (grades K-12) enrolled in a traditional undergraduate program; special education teacher (grades K-12) enrolled in a transition to teaching. 

Secondary Teacher: 

The University of Indianapolis Secondary and All-Grade Education program prepares students to become effective, engaging teachers through a dual major in education and a chosen content area. Students gain hands-on experience in diverse school settings beginning their first year while studying learning theory, literacy, instructional technology, assessment, special education, and English-language learning. Small classes, close faculty mentorship, and school-based coursework help students connect educational theory with real classroom practice. Students may also earn a special education license alongside their secondary teaching license within four years.

Secondary Teacher (Transition to Teaching Program):

The University of Indianapolis Secondary and All-Grade Education program offers a transition-to-teaching pathway for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree and want to become licensed educators. The program combines preparation in learning theory, literacy, instructional technology, assessment, special education, and English-language learning with hands-on experience in diverse secondary-school settings. Through small classes, faculty mentorship, and school-based coursework, participants connect educational theory with classroom practice and develop the skills needed to become effective, engaging, and transformative teachers.

Multilingual Learner Teacher:

UIndy’s Multilingual Learner Teacher Program prepares educators to support multilingual students through culturally responsive, equity-centered instruction. Current teachers can complete a 12-credit, four-course certificate to pursue Indiana’s Teacher of English Language Learners license, while career changers can follow a 24-credit Transition to Teaching pathway. Offered fully online with field-based experiences, the program develops expertise in linguistics, instructional design, assessment, differentiation, leadership, collaboration, and advocacy. Credits may also apply toward UIndy’s Master of Curriculum and Instruction or Master of Arts in Teaching.

Special Education Teacher:

UIndy’s Special Education Teacher Licensure Program prepares students to become skilled, compassionate educators who support learners with disabilities and their families. The program combines evidence-based instruction, innovative interventions, and authentic field experiences to develop effective classroom practice. Through collaboration with experienced faculty, school-based practitioners, and community partners, students learn to create inclusive learning environments, improve student outcomes, and advocate for the needs of exceptional learners.

Special Education Teacher Transition to Teaching Program):

UIndy’s Special Education Transition to Teaching program provides an alternative pathway for individuals with a bachelor’s degree who want to become licensed special education teachers. The program combines evidence-based instruction, innovative interventions, and authentic field experiences to prepare educators to support students with disabilities and their families. Through collaboration with experienced faculty, school-based practitioners, and community stakeholders, candidates develop the skills to create inclusive learning environments, improve student outcomes, and become effective advocates for exceptional learners.
