This intense educational package is specifically designed to educate individuals and provide them hands-on training in the following industrial areas: reading and interpreting machine shop symbols, welding blueprints, working drawings used in trades and crafts, shop safety, and industrial terminology. They will receive hands-on training and perform lab exercises with general purpose hand tools, machine tooling, measurement and layout equipment, turning, milling, grinding as well as all aspects of Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine operation and setup methods, production, in-process inspection, and preventive maintenance methods similar to what the student may experience in the present day work environment.
This will also include the ability to demonstrate correct response to CNC malfunctions and taking appropriate steps to recover the machine as well as interpret CNC programs to determine units of measure, positioning system, tools, spindle speeds, feed rates, canned cycles, coolant use, and axis movements. Our goal is to equip these students with the tools to successfully become National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Certified in the following areas:
Upon successful completion of this program, including their (NIMS) Certifications, students will be equipped for full-time employment in this area.
High-school diploma or equivalent• Competency with basic algebra & geometry (right-triangle trig helpful)• Prior completion of an OSHA-10 (General Industry) course – or – the college’s approved safety orientation• Ability to read standard inch/metric rulers• Familiarity with hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, Allen keys)• Basic PC navigation and file-management skillsRecommended (not mandatory): 6+ months shop, maker-space, or high-school machining experience
