Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) and Practical Nursing (PN) Program Faculty Standard:A full- or part-time faculty member in the ASN or PN program must meet all of the following criteria:1. Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse and,2. Possesses a current, unencumbered Indiana Registered Nurse license, and3. The majority of faculty shall hold master’s degrees in nursing.4. Faculty with Bachelor’s degrees in nursing must meet ALL of the following requirements:a. Within one semester of initial appointment, must have a written academic plan of study for completion of a Master’s degree in nursing, andb. Provides ongoing documentation (each semester) demonstrating matriculation towards completion of a Master’s degree in nursing, andc. Continued employment of a person who does not hold a Master’s degree in nursing shall be contingent upon documented progress towards their approved academic plan.5. The majority of faculty must be full-time employees of the institution. ISBN Title 848 I-A-C 1-2-13.

The Traditional Track of the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree program is designed for individuals with no previous nursing education or licensure.

Preparation for the NCLEX-RN Exam

The ASN Traditional Track prepares students for the NCLEX-RN exam, which is the exam taken to secure licensing as a Registered Nurse (RN). Graduates who successfully pass the NCLEX-RN exam have opportunities to obtain entry-level nursing positions in a variety of healthcare areas, including hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, home health care, physician offices, schools, and health departments.

This program is selective. Once admitted to the program, an Associate of Science in Nursing degree can be achieved in 4 semesters, or about two years. Graduates of the ASN Traditional Track can also choose to transfer to a four-year college or university where they can earn an RN to BSN bachelor’s degree or an RN to MSN master’s degree in nursing.

Graduates of the Ivy Tech Nursing program are qualified to work in hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, home health care, physician offices, schools, and health departments. Typical career opportunities include:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Students must have the following in order to be considered for the ASN traditional program:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • completion of all sections of the Test of Essential Academic Skills V (TEAS V) test at "proficient" level or higher;
  • successful completion (grade of C or higher) of ENGL 111 - English Composition;
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at time of application;
  • completion of PSYC 101 - Introduction to Psychology and APHY 101 - Anatomy & Physiology I.

SELECTIVE ADMISSIONS

The nursing program at Ivy Tech has a selective admissions process, which means not all students who apply to the program will be accepted. Students start by applying to Ivy Tech and enrolling in the Pre-Nursing Studies Certificate program, where they complete prerequisite course requirements. Then students apply to the Nursing program.

How to Apply

Students may apply to the nursing program during three application windows each year:

  • March 15 - May 15 for Fall Program Start
  • August 15 - October 15 for Spring Program Start
  • December 1 - February 1 for Summer Program Start
