The Ivy Tech Associate of Science (AS) in Respiratory Therapy degree program offers laboratory training on the same type of equipment that students will use as professional respiratory therapists. The program focuses on the knowledge and skills required to manage and treat lung disorders.

If you would like to pursue a degree from a four-year college or university, you can save upward of $10,000 by completing your first two years at Ivy Tech and then transferring! Our Respiratory Therapy program currently has partnerships with two schools so you can seamlessly transfer without losing your credits or time:

  • Indiana University-Indianapolis
  • Indiana Wesleyan University

Respiratory Therapists are health care specialists who provide care for patients with breathing disorders. Care includes assessment, evaluation, and treatment of patients ranging in age from premature infants to the elderly. Therapists also work with adults who have chronic lung problems, such as asthma or emphysema. As a respiratory therapist, you must possess good communication skills. You will work side by side with physicians, nurses and other health care providers in caring for patients with lung disorders. We offer the ability to use the same equipment in the laboratory that they will use in the hospital upon graduation. It is a challenging program, but by the end of it students will be ready for their board exams as well as employment.

PREPARE FOR NATIONAL EXAMS

Ivy Tech's Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy degree program prepares students to take the national board exams they'll need to take to begin practicing in the field. Graduates must pass the exams to earn a credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). These exams cost $120 and are embedded in RESP 205.

The Respiratory Therapy program is a selective admission program. When you apply to the College, you will be accepted into Healthcare Specialist with a concentration in Respiratory Therapy while you complete the prerequisite requirements. The Respiratory Therapy program accepts a limited number of students each year and there is a separate application process.

Students who are admitted to the program will be required to pay for and submit to a criminal background check, drug testing and physical exam. The details and process will be provided at an orientation.
