Description

A qualified full time faculty member in medical laboratory technology meets all three of the following criteria:

  • Possesses an earned baccalaureate or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in Medical Technology, and
  • Is an American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist, registered Medical Technologist (MT), or a registered Medical Laboratory Technician; and
  • Has two years of directly related work experience.

A qualified adjunct faculty member teaching any course must meet the following criteria:

  • Possesses an earned associates or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Laboratory Science. or allied health, and
  • Is an American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)cm or Medical Laboratory Scientist, registered Medical Technologist (MT), or a registered Medical Laboratory Technician; and
  • Has two years of directly related work experience.

Ivy Tech's Medical Laboratory Technology program emphasizes hands-on learning — including experience in a hospital lab. Each course features lab and lecture components, teaching skills such as:

  • Collecting, processing and analyzing biological specimens
  • Performing analytical tests of body fluids and cells
  • Identifying and factors that affect lab procedures and results and making necessary corrections
  • Practicing quality control and safety principles
  • Relating lab findings to common diseases
  • Interacting with other lab and healthcare personnel, patients and the public
