Ivy Tech Community College approved instructor with work experience and/or education in a course or related field.
The classroom instruction focuses on basic electricity and troubleshooting for air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces. Other topics included in the course are the concepts of refrigeration, refrigerant recovery, how to properly charge a system, and other information necessary for the federally required EPA 608 certification. Instruction is also provided for basic maintenance with HVAC equipment and soldering copper pipe and fittings. An equal amount of time is provided in the HVAC lab for applying the classroom concepts on real equipment. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will: 1. Have a basic understanding of electrical concepts.2. Have a basic understanding of refrigeration concepts.3. Have a basic understanding of heating fundamentals.4. Troubleshoot and repair of HVAC equipment.5. Understand refrigerant recovery and disposal methods.6. Perform the proper charge of a refrigerant system.7. Solder copper pipe and fittings.
