Description

Instructor with 16+ years of teaching and 30+ years in the workforce as a Registered Nurse.

This class will prepare individuals desiring to work as qualified medication aide with the knowledge and skills needed to administer approved medications in long term care settings. The most common medications in current use are discussed according to body systems, with emphasis on classification, uses, routes of administrations, dosages, interactions, incompatibilities, and side effects. Communication, standard precautions, safety, residents’ rights, documentation, scope of practice of the QMA, legal aspects and patent education. This course meets the minimum standards set forth by the ISDH.  Individuals who successfully complete the course are eligible to apply for the Indiana State Department of Health competency evaluation test for Qualified Medication Aides. 


Over the course of 7 weeks the classroom time will be held 3 days of week for 3 hours.  Each student is required upon completion of the 60-hour coursework to complete 40-hours of practicum.  The minimum number of students to hold the class is 5.

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Each student must demonstrate ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical functions.  Each student must be 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED/equivalent or be enrolled in a HSE/GED program.  Documentation of at least 1,000 hours of work experience as a CNA within two years prior to applying to become a QMA.  Proof of completion of Indiana CNA course and inclusion on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry is required.  Physical, TB test, background check, etc and any other regionally determined registration requirements per ISDH.
