This program prepares students to recognize, assess, and manage medical emergencies in pre-hospital and clinical settings. Includes instruction in emergency surgical procedures; medical triage; rescue operations; patient stabilization, monitoring, and care; drug administration; identification and preliminary diagnosis of diseases and injuries; and professional standards and regulations. A paramedic helps save lives in the event of illness or injury and gain the satisfaction of assisting others in emergency situations. A paramedic can make a difference and change lives. A person that chooses to become a paramedic is someone who wants to be a public servant and has the gift of compassion and caring. Even the smallest detail can make the difference between life and death. The Paramedic Science program at Ivy Tech is taught by some of the area's finest paramedics. Students will benefit from 360 hours of clinical experience, 400 hours of an internship using hands-on experiences in actual patient care settings. The curriculum is a careful mix of lecture, demonstration, in-class skill practice sessions and clinical rotations. Through all of these experiences, students obtain the knowledge and skills to allow them to function in the ever changing world of Emergency Medical Services. The Paramedic Science program is a selective admission program. When you apply to the College, you will be accepted into HealthcareSpecialist with a concentration in Paramedic Science while you complete the prerequisite requirements. The Paramedic Science program accepts a limited number of students each year and there is a separate application process. Contact your campus of interest below for more details. Students who are admitted to the program will be required to pay for and submit to a criminal background check, drug testing and physical exam. The details and process will be provided at an orientation. Please contact the program faculty for more detailed information. Once our students are eligible for graduation they can take the National Registry Paramedic exams. Our graduates that successfully pass this exam are working as ambulance paramedics, firefighter paramedics, tactical paramedics, emergency room paramedics, and even wilderness paramedics. Our graduates are currently working in some of the best hospitals and EMS providers across the state.
