Qualifications of Instructors:

HLHS 117 Course Standard:A qualified faculty member teaching QMA Preparation meets all of the following criteria:1. Possesses an earned associate’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution, and2. Is a licensed Registered Nurse holding an unencumbered license in the state of Indiana, and3. Has a minimum of two years licensed nursing experience, of which at least one year must be in the provision of long term care services, and4. Completed the required Indiana state department of health instructor QMA course.

Program Description:

This course meets the minimum standards set forth by the ISDH for Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) training. The course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to administer approved medications in long term care settings. Classroom instruction is provided, followed by clinical training that is supervised one on one by a licensed nurse. The most common medications in current use are discussed according to body systems, with emphasis on classification, uses, routes of administration, dosages, interactions incompatibilities, and side effects. Also addressed are communication, standard precautions, safety, residents’ rights, documentation, scope of practice of the QMA, legal aspects and patient education. Individuals who successfully complete this course are eligible to apply for the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) competency evaluation test for Qualified Medication Aides. This course includes the Insulin Administration Module provided by ISDH.

51.2603 Medication Aide A program that prepares individuals to administer prescribed medications; observe and report patient reactions and side effects; and perform related emergency and recording duties under the supervision of nurses and/or physicians. Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, common medications and their effects, taking vital signs, oxygen administration, medication administration and application, record-keeping, and patient observation.

Prerequisites Description:

PREREQUISITES: Program Advisor Approval and regulations per the Indiana State Department of Health: demonstratedability to read and write in English; demonstrated ability to perform the four basic mathematical functions, proof of highschool diploma or GED, proof of being at least 18 years of age, proof of completion of Indiana CNA course or its equivalentand inclusion on Indiana Nurse Aide Registry, documentation of at least 1000 hours of work experience as CNA within twoyears prior to applying to become a QMA; other regionally determined registration requirements.
