Those completing the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant program taught by VHGwill gain the skills required to provide administrative support in a medical office setting. Those skills include: Reviewing and answering practice correspondence Operating computer systems to accomplish office tasks Answering calls and scheduling appointments Greeting patients and updating electronic medical records Updating and maintaining patient and other practice-specific information Coordinating operation reports such as time and attendance Operating office software and equipment Other responsibilities of medical administrative assistants can include: Checking patients in for scheduled appointments. Answering phones and maintaining databases. Keeping track of medical records and charts. Transferring lab results to appropriate technicians. Ordering supplies and maintaining general office standards. Understandingethical and legal issues, fraud abuse, and compliance. Understanding communication techniques. Employingbasic medical terminology used in the office. Implementing HIPAA procedures and adhere to the patient bill of rights and confidentiality. Understandingfinancial and practice management. Understanding health insurance coverage, and billing and coding procedures. Understanding professional fees, billing and collecting procedures, accounting systems and credit arrangements.
