o Meets the full-time faculty discipline standard; or

o Possesses a Department of Labor, Bureau for Apprenticeship Training recognized journeyman’s card in the discipline directly related to credentials, certifications, and competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and in journeyman status for two years or more with experience that is specifically linked to the competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and

§ Possesses any specialized certifications required for the class being taught as indicated in the Curriculum of Record (COR); or

o Possesses any specialized certifications or credentials required for the class being taught as indicated in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and

§ 5 years directly related work experience in the field that is specifically linked to the competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR); or

o Possesses a current Workplace Specialist License, Technology Education License (Technology and Engineering Education, Engineering and Technology Education), or CTE: Trade & Industrial Engineer or Manufacturing License granted by the Indiana Department of Education appropriate to course objectives and directly linked to credentials, certifications, and competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and

Program Description:

CourseID: MFITSMW6

This advanced course is designed for individuals seeking to build on foundational welding skills with a deeper focus on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Participants will gain hands-on experience with advanced SMAW techniques while also learning practical cutting methods using Oxy-fuels. Instruction covers essential topics such as workplace safety, interpreting blueprints and welding symbols, identifying and preparing welding joints, recognizing and correcting welding defects, and understanding the properties of different metals. Students will also review welding procedure specifications (WPS) and explore career pathways in the welding industry, including the certifications and qualifications needed to advance.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Apply safety protocols for operating electric and oxy-fuel welding and cutting equipment.
Interpret and construct basic welding joints, recognizing appropriate applications.
Analyze heat input and metal distortion and apply methods to minimize welding defects.
Explain the capabilities and limitations of electric welding equipment.
Perform welds using both AC and DC current with proper setup and technique.
Prepare metal surfaces through cleaning, fitting, and tacking procedures.
Execute single-pass and multi-pass welds with consistency and accuracy.
Demonstrate proficiency welding in flat and horizontal positions.
Identify SMAW electrodes and describe AWS electrode classifications.
Apply DC reverse polarity techniques in Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
Select and manipulate electrodes appropriately for various welding applications.
Demonstrate correct techniques for each welding position using 6011, 7014, and 7018 electrodes.

48.0508 Welding Technology/Welder A program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to join or cut metal surfaces. Includes instruction in arc welding, resistance welding, brazing and soldering, cutting, high-energy beam welding and cutting, solid state welding, ferrous and non-ferrous materials, oxidation-reduction reactions, welding metallurgy, welding processes and heat treating, structural design, safety, and applicable codes and standards.

Prerequisites Description:

Students should already know welding safety, equipment setup, and be able to make simple welds in the flat position.
Basic Welding Skills Demonstrated
– Ability to strike and maintain an arc.
– Ability to produce sound single-pass welds with mild steel.
– Familiarity with oxy-fuel cutting and safety procedures.
Knowledge of Welding Terminology and Symbols
– Students should be able to read simple blueprints and identify standard weld symbols.
Protective Gear
– Students must provide or have access to appropriate PPE (helmet, jacket, gloves, safety glasses, etc.).
Recommended (but not always required):
– Prior hands-on experience in SMAW or other welding processes (MIG, TIG, oxy-fuel).
– Mechanical aptitude and basic math skills for interpreting measurements and tolerances.
