Holds industry-recognized certification (NIMS CNC Mill and Lathe Certifications)

Ivy Tech Faculty Standards for programs in Technology:
- Meets the full-time faculty discipline standard; or
- Possesses a Department of Labor, Bureau for Apprenticeship Training recognized journeyman’s card in the discipline directly related to credentials, certifications, and competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and in journeyman status for two years or more with experience that is specifically linked to the competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and
  - Possesses any specialized certifications required for the class being taught as indicated in the Curriculum of Record (COR); or
- Possesses any specialized certifications or credentials required for the class being taught as indicated in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and
  - 5 years directly related work experience in the field that is specifically linked to the competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR); or
- Possesses a current Workplace Specialist License, Technology Education License (Technology and Engineering Education, Engineering and Technology Education), or CTE: Trade & Industrial Engineer or Manufacturing License granted by the Indiana Department of Education appropriate to course objectives and directly linked to credentials, certifications, and competencies listed in the Curriculum of Record (COR), and
  - Possesses any specialized certifications required for the class being taught as indicated in the Curriculum of Record (COR).

Program Description:

The course provides an introduction to the operation of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery for industrial metalworking. Participants will be introduced to the concepts of blueprint reading, interpretation of working drawings, measurements, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Students will study terminology of coordinates, cutter paths, angle cutting, and linear/circular interpolation. Related machining practices in CNC milling and latheing will be covered. The shop mathematics concepts of fractions/decimals, metrics, geometry, calculating formulas, and trigonometry will be introduced and used in project-based learning applications. Participants will receive hands-on training and demonstrations on CNC machining equipment and related tools while developing competencies in both the operation and basic programming of equipment controls and inspection of finished parts.

This class provides the opportunity to test and receive two indsutry recognized credentials through NIMS - CNC Mill Operations and CNC Lathe Operations.

48.0510 Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Machinist Technology/CNC Machinist A program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to operate computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, such as lathes, mills, precision measuring tools, and related attachments and accessories, to perform machining functions, such as cutting, drilling, shaping, and finishing products and component parts. Includes instruction in CNC terminology, setup, programming, operations, and troubleshooting; blueprint reading; machining; lathe and mill operations; technical mathematics; computer literacy; CAD/CAM systems; shop and safety practices; equipment capabilities; and regulations and laws.

Prerequisites Description:

Competency with basic algebra & geometry (right-triangle trig helpful)
Prior completion of an OSHA-10 (General Industry) course – or – the college’s approved safety orientation
Ability to read standard inch/metric rulers
Familiarity with hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, Allen keys)
Basic PC navigation and file-management skills

Recommended (not mandatory): 6+ months shop, maker-space, or high-school machining experience
