The program consists of classroom instruction, psychomotor skill development, emergency department, and 911 and general transport field experiences. It is designed to provide adequate time to reach minimum competency in knowledge, skills, and professionalism according to the National Education Standards (http://www.ems.gov/pdf/811077a.pdf) and the National EMS Education Standards and Instructional Guidelines (https://www.ems.gov/education.html). Cognitive and psychomotor goals of the program include the development of basic knowledge in anatomy, physiology, medical and trauma pathophysiology, EMS ethics and legalities, patient assessment, and BLS treatment modalities. Affective goals include development of an understanding of the multi-faceted situations faced by patients, and an appreciation for the EMS provider’s abilities and limitations in addressing such. Displaying a professional attitude toward patients, family members, instructors, preceptors, other students, hospital staff, and employees of the host departments and agencies is a basic expectation. Students will participate enthusiastically and actively seek out learning opportunities. Classroom instruction consists of lecture presentations, learning activities, and labs. A syllabus with class dates and times is provided during orientation night. If variation in the schedule becomes necessary, students will be given reasonable notice of the exception. In the event of severe weather, students will be notified via Remind® messaging at least one hour prior to the scheduled start of class of a change in schedule. The schedule is divided into three Terms. The primary text for the program is Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 12th edition by the AAOS. Textbooks are purchased by the student and are required by the first day of class. A request for an exception to any policy must be made by the first session of the course of the program. The request must be in writing and include rationale for the exception requested.
