According to ISDH requirements, the CNA program must be taught by an registered nurse with at least 1 year experience in long-term care and at least 2 years experience as an RN. The director of Health Careers Training holds a BSN.
This is a CNA program given according to ISDH curriculum and requirements. At least 30 hours of didactic classroom must be offered and at least 75 hours clinical practicum must be offered. Sixteen hours of that may be in lab prior to clinical. Clinical practicum is given in a long-term care facility. Students are taught to assist with activities of daily living for persons whose mental or physical capabilities are limited in some way. Students with this state certification may work in long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, hospitals and in other settings where need for their expertise is evident. Seventy-two specific "resident care procedures" are taught to students during class and clinical. When training is complete and students have satisfactorily completed their clinical portion, state examination is given in 2 parts: written and skills competency evaluation. Each student is allowed 3 exams to be successful in both written and skills evaluation wthin a 2-year period following completion of the course. If a student is unsuccessful after 3 attempts, the student may apply to take the course again.
The student must be at least 16 years of age and must have had a prework physical stating the health of the student is adequate for the job. The student must also have had a negative two-step tuberculin skin test, Quanteferon gold blooddraw, or a chest xray showing no active tuberculosis. The student must be able to read and write.
Apllication deadlines vary according to class and are typically one week prior to class orientation.
