Qualifications of Instructors:

Health Care Port confirms each instructors’ academic background and work experience to ensure they are qualified to teach in the program.

Education and experience include, but are not limited to, certificates and/or degrees from postsecondary institutions; certifications from industry-recognized agencies, and practical work experience in, or in a field closely related to, the career fields the program prepares students to enter.

5 years experience or Bachelors Degree in psychology, education, speech, theology or other related field preferred; Instructors must have the required education and experience to appropriately teach the program content.

Program Description:

Behavioral specialists/ Mental Health Tech observe and provide support for patients who have behavioral or emotional conditions. Their responsibilities can vary depending on their work location, but common duties include:

Observing, recording and evaluating a patient's behavior
Designing behavioral treatment strategies
Providing assistance and guidance through the treatment process
Communicating with patients, their parents and teachers
Collecting data about a patient's progress
Writing patient reports and documenting behaviors
Performing tests to evaluate the patient's growth

51.1502 Psychiatric/Mental Health Services Technician A program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and other mental health care professionals, to provide direct patient care services, assist in developing and implementing treatment plans, administer medications, and perform related administrative functions. Includes instruction in mental health theory, applied psychopathology, patient communication and management, crisis intervention, psychotropic medication, mental health treatment procedures, substance abuse, record-keeping, clinical administrative skills, and applicable standards and regulations.
