Instructor Karen Arndt holds a current teaching license in Accounting, Clerical, Vocational Business and Data Processing, as well as a MasterDegree in Secondary Education. Karen has been teaching for over 30 years, the last 10 of which have been with SBCSC Adult Education.
The course objective is to prepare students with the career and technical education required to become a certified Mechatronics andIndustrial Automation Technician. The course will utilize the 180 Skills online learning platform, which creates an alternative pathway for students with barriers that prevent them from attending a classroom-based education. Each career program is made up of multiple modules based on the manufacturing industry of student interest (as well as employability skills modules). In order for a student to complete the certification in less than 2-3 months, it is recommended that students complete three modules a day (1 hour each), five days a week. The course will be monitored and supported by an instructor. The instructor will be available for open computer lab times, to support students without the technical requirements at home and to provide additional reading strategies.The students will also have the option ofrecievingan OSHA 10-hour certification for the general industry.
The academic prerequisite requirement for admission into the program is a TABE reading and writing level of 8th grade or higher and math level of 6th grade or higher for HSE, or TABE CLAS-E level 4 or higher for ELL. In addition, applicants must have accumulated 12 hours of Adult Education time.
