Qualifications of Instructors:

Optometric Technology Program Standard
A qualified faculty member in Optometric Technology meets all three of the following criteria:
1. Possesses an earned baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution; and
2. Has a minimum of two years directly related work experience; and
3. Must be a certified professional within the optometric/ophthalmic field, be an optometrist, or have other appropriate qualifications.

Program Description:

The Optician and Eye Care program prepares students for careers as Opticians, having the opportunity to get hands-on training by participating in clinical practicums at optometry facilities throughout South Central Indiana. Opticians work closely with optometrists as part of the eye care team; measuring visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, field of vision, and pressures within the eye. In addition, Opticians fill vision prescriptions, produce and shape eyeglass lenses and assist in contact lens procedures.

When students complete 33 credit hours of the 60 required for the associate degree, they will be eligible to sit for the National Opticianry Competency Examination and the Contact Lens Registry Examination.

The number of students who can be admitted each year is currently limited to 10.

Students will be required to meet the requirements outlined in the Essential Functions.

51.1801 Opticianry/Ophthalmic Dispensing Optician A program that prepares individuals to adapt and fit corrective eyewear, including eyeglasses and contact lenses, as prescribed by ophthalmologists or optometrists; to assist patients in selecting appropriate frames; and to prepare work orders for ophthalmic laboratory technicians. Includes instruction in geometrical optics, ophthalmic optics, anatomy of the eye, optical instrumentation, use and maintenance of adjustment and cleaning tools, prescription interpretation, contact lens adaptation and fitting, prosthesis fitting, facial and eye measuring, pathology identification, record-keeping, and patient and business administrative tasks.
