Qualifications of Instructors:
Bachelors/MastersAssociate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) and Practical Nursing (PN) Program Faculty Standard:A full- or part-time faculty member in the ASN or PN program must meet all of the following criteria:1. Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse and,2. Possesses a current, unencumbered Indiana Registered Nurse license, and3. The majority of faculty shall hold masters degrees in nursing.4. Faculty with Bachelors degrees in nursing must meet ALL of the following requirements:a. Within one semester of initial appointment, must have a written academic plan of study for completion of a Masters degree in nursing, andb. Provides ongoing documentation (each semester) demonstrating matriculation towards completion of a Masters degree in nursing, andc. Continued employment of a person who does not hold a Masters degree in nursing shall be contingent upon documented progress towards their approved academic plan.5. Program Description:
Students in the Nursing program at Ivy Tech learn to care for real patients in a variety of clinical settings throughout the program including lab simulations, long-term care, hospital, labor and delivery units, pediatric units, emergency department, ICU, surgery and mental health facilities. Depending how far you go in your education, youll be qualified to: Monitor vital signs, bathe and dress patients, assist with repositioning and walking (Pre-Nursing Studies short-term certificate) Perform wound care, monitor vital signs, administer medications, collect specimens, and address patient concerns as a collaborative member of the health care team. (Practical Nursing long-term certificate) Assess patients, perform various treatments, assist in diagnostic testing, and provide holistic support and health education to patients and families as a care team manager. (Associate of Science in Nursing) PRACTICAL NURSING LONG-TERM CERTIFICATE The Practical Nursing long-term certificate (previously known as a technical certificate) is designed for individuals who aim to be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). LPNs are an integral part of the health care team. Typical professional activities for an LPN include medication administration, wound care, specimen collection, vital signs measurement, and addressing patient concerns to physicians and RNs (team leaders). The Practical Nursing program provides education in conceptual and technical nursing skills and graduates are qualified to provide basic care, under the direction of registered nurses and doctors, for patients in a variety of health care settings such as nursing homes, extended care facilities, hospitals, clinics, home health care, and physician offices. Once admitted to the program, a Practical Nursing long-term certificate can be achieved in one year, or 2-3 semesters. Preparation for the Exam to Become a LPN Practical Nursing graduates are eligible to apply for the NCLEX-PN licensure exam, which is the exam taken to secure licensing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Graduates who successfully pass the NCLEX-PN exam can begin their career in nursing or continue on to the LPN to ASN Transitional Track course of study.
